Medical Skin Care

Since we began medical skin care in our practice over 20 years ago, I have attended numerous meetings in this dynamic and exciting area of medicine. However the Ultimate Skin Health Symposium in Los Angeles in which I just participated stands out as one of those events that will profoundly affect the future of medical skin care. The event was hosted by Dr Zein Obagi, one of the originators of advanced skin care concepts and the original founder of Obagi Medical Systems, although he is no longer affiliated with the original Obagi company. He had invited the most innovative national and international experts in evolving trends in skin wellness and treatment including other dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

The concept of comprehensive long term programs to maximize skin health has been a major focus of our medical practice and Evolv and was the main theme of this meeting; it was exciting to see these principles and their applications with new products, services and technologies. This emerging new philosophy, which I find very exciting, is the concept of total skin health as the fundamental basis in all areas of skin aging and treatment. This principle focuses on prevention, correction and long term skin health as the best approach in treating disease or improving aging.

Non invasive alternative to facial rejuvenation

The focus at our plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine practices has been to provide patients with research proven choices involving the most effective and safe options in surgical as well as non-surgical rejuvenation. These individualized plans do not typically involve one procedure but importantly encompass a balance of options with a priority on less invasive choices with reduced cost and down time. Natural appearing results often require a comprehensive approach and a long term plan.
The dramatic improvement in medical technology and product science has resulted in significantly better outcomes for our patients.

This emerging and exciting trend is exemplified by the progress in using safe and non-surgical ultrasound to lift and firm facial tissues; a process known as Ultherapy. When we first started using Ulthera nearly 3 years ago, results were encouraging but not always consistent. Since that time, Ultherapy has improved the treatment results significantly with new options and improved technical equipment. Our light therapy and technology nurse Cathy Glanz RN has completed basic and advanced certification in Ultherapy treatments and is one of the most experienced professionals in the country in the application Ulthera treatment. This is critical because like most aesthetic and surgical procedures, the experience and training of the service professional is often the most critical factor in obtaining maximal and safe results.

The ability to lift and firm facial and neck tissues non-surgically with an in office treatment is in increasing demand by patients and Ulthera is the only FDA technology approved for this purpose. We are excited about the future for less invasive aesthetic treatments for our patients and we are seeing significantly improved results by incorporating medical skin care and topical growth factors into the treatment options.

Cellulaze Update

Several weeks ago, I discussed the exciting new laser treatment for permanent improvement in cellulite and body contouring called ‘Cellulaze’. This is a highly technical procedure using new laser technology to change the actual structure of cellulite commonly seen the the legs and buttocks of up to 85% of our female patients.

The new triple wavelength laser system called ‘Smart Lipo Triplex’ allows more efficient and selective removal of fat along with maximal skin and tissue tightening and offers significantly improved outcomes over other technologies for body shaping.

After an extensive investigation and trial period, we decided to utilize Cellulaze and the Triplex Smart Lipo in our medical practice. In addition, Cellulaze was recently approved by the FDA as the only technology that offers permanent improvement in the reduction of cellulite.

We began using these exciting treatments after I returned form training with Dr Barry DeBernardo in New Jersey who is a plastic surgeon and the lead investigator in the research study with Cellulaze for cellulite treatment approved by the FDA.

We have been using the Cellulaze and Smart Lipo Triplex system for our patients and have seen some exciting early results, especially with skin and tissue tightening. Although the treatment is time consuming and technical, it offers unique benefits and the best results we have ever seen in body contouring for appropriately selected patients. This has been quite gratifying since we previously did not have any research proven options for improving cellulite and non-surgically firming lax skin on the body.

These are truly exciting times in aesthetic medicine!

Revolutionary Cellulite Treatment Coming Soon to Toledo!

I am very excited about a new technology that, for the first time, offers the ability to significantly and permanently reduce cellulite in just one treatment.

Cellulite is an important and frustrating issue for as many as 85% of women after puberty. Liposuction does not improve cellulite, and can sometimes make it even more noticeable. Despite many claims and advertisements, nothing has ever been effective or proven by credible studies – until now.

Cellulaze is a new and revolutionary laser technique that permanently reduces cellulite by changing the actual structure under the skin that creates it. I have experienced this frustrating issue in our patients for over 20 years and despite researching and testing every credible option, have never found a real or long lasting, safe solution until Cellulaze.

I was at first skeptical but I recently spent some time observing and training with the technique live in New Jersey with one of the world’s experts, Dr Barry DiBernardo, a board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. DiBernardo actually performed and published the initial research and patient studies with Cellulaze leading to the very recent FDA approval.

The procedure is usually done with oral sedation and local anesthetic, takes 1 to 2 hours per area in the operating room, and is usually needed only once. Results are immediate and keep improving for up to one year.

Our practice is also introducing a new multiple wavelength laser liposuction technology that provides much more effective (40%) fat removal and skin tightening compared to previous options.

We are excited to be the first practice in the Toledo area to introduce Cellulaze and Triplex-Laser technology for treating cellulite and improving body contouring for our patients. They will make an exciting addition to our current comprehensive rejuvenation programs in aesthetic care.

BRA Day – Changing the way the world looks at Post-Mastectomy Reconstruction

When I completed training in Plastic Surgery residency nearly 25 years ago, I decided to postpone starting my practice in Toledo so I could pursue fellowship specialty training in breast cancer reconstruction at Vanderbilt in Nashville. That was a decision that not only changed my professional career, but also has positively influenced my life in many unexpected ways.

Reconstruction for the breast cancer patients has truly transformed the cancer experience for many women. We have followed our patients through the journey of initial fear and misbelief upon learning of their cancer diagnosis to a place of confidence and strength after completing their treatment and reconstruction. This transformation is not only physical, but also mental and emotional.

Despite the many well documented benefits to the quality of life and overall well being in these patients, 70% of women eligible for post mastectomy reconstruction are still not being informed of their options. Women in the United States with health insurance have had the right to choose breast reconstruction after mastectomy since federal legislation was passed in 1998 mandating insurance coverage for reconstruction of the breast. Surgery of the other breast in order to achieve symmetry with the reconstructed side is also covered by law for breast cancer patients.

Please join us in supporting Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day) on October 17. The mission is to develop and advance an internationally recognized annual day that promotes awareness and access to post-cancer breast reconstruction surgery. This event will be coordinated at many sites across the United States, including right here in Toledo.

The goal is also to recognize the courage and strength of the many women who have faced this challenge and not only survived but become stronger and more focused in their lives. This will be an educational day and will provide an opportunity to share ideas, concerns and feelings that will help others improve their quality of life when confronting the breast cancer experience.

Breast Reconstruction Toledo

Breast reconstruction can be a great relief for our patients in Toledo, Ohio who have undergone breast removal or distortion due to breast cancer treatment or other disease. Due to new surgical techniques our surgeons have the ability to create reconstructions that look and feel like natural breasts.
Breast reconstruction with Dr. Barone is typically performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. There are many different techniques: including tissue expanders, implants, and flaps (your own tissue). Thankfully the procedure has no known effect on the recurrence of cancer, and breast reconstruction can often be performed at the same time as a mastectomy or at any time there after. If an unfortunate relapse should occur and your oncologist should find that cancer has returned, your reconstruction should not pose any interference with either chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
