The Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists (SPSSCS) Annual Meeting
Boston, MA
The annual ASAPS and SPSCS meetings are the premiere educational events of the year for our specialties and bring together not only the leading plastic and aesthetic surgeons and aestheticians in this country, but also those from all over the world including Asia, Europe, Africa and South America. In addition, all of the top medical skin care and aesthetic product companies and technology innovators participate to truly offer an incredible learning experience.
Thursday – A big event for the evolv aestheticians on Thursday was the SkinMedica Advisory Board. This is an invitation-only round table style meeting that only the top aestheticians are invited to. We are honored to hold three of those spots for this year-most practices only have one attending! This is an important forum for SkinMedica to gather information and feedback from aestheticians on the current product offerings and on products we hope to see in the future. We hear there are some exciting new things coming up from them in the near future and can’t wait to tell our patients more!
Morgan, Chelsea and Amy at the Advisory Board Dinner
Dr. Barone also gave a presentation to the Physicians and aestheticians that attended! Some notes directly from the doctor himself: “I gave my presentation ‘State of the Art: Comprehensive Medical Skin Care for Skin Cancer Prevention and Treatment’; this was the first time I had given this lecture and it was a LOT of work but very well received; it focused on the new preventative and therapeutic programs we have used at evolv and the practice for sun damage, and skin precancers and invasive cancers utilizing photodynamic therapy, lasers and peels.” Congrats Dr. Barone!
Friday – Morgan reported to us about the classes attended Friday-her favorite being about treating inflammation and the important role topical antioxidants play in skin care.
Vitamin C continues to be the gold-standard antioxidant in skin care, because it is a free radical scavenger that fights signs of aging while enhancing collagen production for firmer skin. Vitamin C also helps reduce hyperpigmentation and age spots.
When looking for a Vitamin C, it is especially important to consider the FORMULATION (is it stable and can it get into the skin cell) and POTENCY (is it strong enough to make a change in the skin). A great formulation is Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, a stable, lipid-soluble ester form of Vitamin C found in SkinMedica’s Vitamin C+E Complex and TNS Essential Serum.
Morgan also was excited to see more of the great results practices are seeing from the Redness Relief Calmplex. This clinical breakthrough reduces visible redness by addressing the underlying causes, while helping to promote healthy skin. She looks forward to sharing this information with her patients and loves keeping up with the evolving technology of products and procedures.
Saturday – Amy commented on the Physician Panel the aestheticians sat in on Saturday. The main focus was a discussion of new lasers and techniques. One major point that was stressed by the group was the importance of skin preparation before and after procedures – which is very important to Dr. Barone.
Prepping the skin before any cosmetic procedure ensures better overall results and reduces your risk of complications. The ideal prep should include AT LEAST:
- A 4% Hydroquinone suppresses your skin’s pigment production, evening out brown discolorations from the sun and reduces post procedure pigmentation risks.
- A Retinoid assists in stimulating new collagen, increases cell turnover, and improves circulation so skin heals more quickly.
In addition to the hydroquinone and retinoid, the following two types of products are also beneficial for a patient undergoing laser skin resurfacing or any other type of procedure including surgery:
- An Antioxidant—this helps with improving overall skin health, repairing and preventing sun damage and minimizing inflammation.
- TNS (Tissue Nutrient Solution) contains 110 different tissue growth factors. These advanced ingredients strengthen the skin, enhance the healing process, reduce inflammation and improve elasticity.
Amy was honored to have the opportunity to be involved in the panel and looks forward to next year’s conference!
